Cashew
Cashew
The cashew is a tropical tree (Anacardium occidentale) and also the name of its edible seed, which is commonly known as a cashew nut.
Description of the Cashew:
1. Cashew Tree:
* Type: Evergreen, tropical tree.
* Height: Typically grows 10–12 meters (33–40 feet) tall.
* Origin: Native to northeastern Brazil, now widely cultivated in tropical regions like India, Vietnam, and Africa.
* Leaves: Broad, leathery, and oval-shaped.
2. Cashew Fruit:
* The tree produces two parts:
* Cashew Apple: A pear-shaped, fleshy structure (technically a false fruit). It’s edible, juicy, and slightly tart. Commonly used in juices, jams, or fermented into liquor.
* Cashew Nut: The true fruit (a kidney-shaped drupe) that grows at the end of the apple. It contains a single seed—the part we eat.
3. Cashew Nut (Seed):
* Appearance: Kidney-shaped, creamy-white inside with a thin brown skin.
* Taste: Mild, buttery, and slightly sweet.
* Uses: Popular as a snack (raw, roasted, or salted), and used in cooking, baking, and in products like cashew butter, cashew milk, and vegan cheeses.
4. Processing Note:
* Raw cashew nuts are toxic and contain urushiol, a substance also found in poison ivy.
* Cashews must be roasted or steamed to remove this toxin before consumption.
5. Nutritional Value:
* High in healthy fats (mainly monounsaturated fats), protein, and essential minerals like magnesium, copper, and zinc.
* Considered a heart-healthy food when eaten in moderation.
