Charcoal
Charcoal
Charcoal is a lightweight, black, carbon-rich material produced by heating wood or other organic substances in the absence of oxygen a process called pyrolysis. This removes water, volatile compounds, and other elements, leaving mostly carbon behind.
Types of Charcoal:
1. Lump Charcoal – Made directly from hardwood; irregular in shape and burns hot and clean.
2. Charcoal Briquettes – Compressed from powdered charcoal, often with binders and additives for even burning.
3. Activated Charcoal – Processed to have a high surface area; used in filtration, medicine, and cosmetics.
Properties:
* Porous: Excellent at adsorbing substances.
* Burns Hot: Commonly used as a fuel for grilling and forging.
* Low Smoke: Compared to raw wood, it produces less smoke.
Uses:
* Fuel: For barbecues, fireplaces, and blacksmithing.
* Filtration: In air and water purifiers.
* Medical: Treating poison ingestion or overdoses (activated charcoal).
* Art: As a medium in drawing.
Charcoal has been used for thousands of years and remains valuable across many industries today.
