Copra Meal
Copra Meal
Copra meal, also known as coconut meal, is derived from the mature fruit of the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera). After the coconut is split open, the kernel is extracted and dried to reduce its moisture content to below 6%. This process results in copra meal, which still retains some oil. When feeding copra meal to livestock, it is important to ensure that it is fresh and not rancid, as rancid meal can cause digestive issues like diarrhea. Rancidity typically occurs if the meal is stored for extended periods in unsuitable conditions, such as exposure to high temperatures.
Copra meal should not be introduced abruptly into the diets of pigs or poultry. It is advisable to gradually incorporate it over time to help animals adjust to its taste and avoid initial feed refusal. Copra meal can be included in the diets of pigs, poultry, cattle, and horses of all ages, with the exception of very young animals. However, it has a low content of essential amino acids like lysine and histidine, and its high fiber content limits its suitability in poultry and pig feeds.
