- Dryness Level (Moisture Content) : Maximum 2% to 5%. The shells must be completely dry to prevent the growth of mold or bacteria, or the development of a fishy odor from organic residue during storage.
- Shell Condition (Intact & Hard) : For handicrafts, the shell intact, thick, and free of cracks or holes. For industrial/feed use, the shell possesses a high degree of hardness, indicating a dense and fully matured calcium structure.
- Cleanliness: Free from shellfish meat residues, mud, sand, algae, or other foreign objects (such as anchor ropes or plastic).
- Color and Luster: The outer surface is naturally black, blackish-brown, or dark gray, and clean—free of whitish patches caused by chemical weathering. The interior of the shell is ideally clean and displays a distinct natural luster (mother-of-pearl).
