Gum Copal PWS

Gum Copal PWS

Gum copal is a natural resin derived from the sap of trees in the Daniellia or Hymenaea genus, commonly found in tropical regions of Africa, Asia, and South America. It is considered a semi-fossilized resin — intermediate in age and hardness between fresh tree resins and ancient amber.

Key Characteristics:

Appearance: Ranges in color from pale yellow to deep brown. It's usually sold as irregular chunks or granules.
Texture: Brittle and glassy, but softer than fully fossilized resins like amber.
Solubility: Soluble in alcohol, turpentine, and some oils, which makes it useful in varnish and paint production.
Fragrance: Has a pleasant, earthy or pine-like aroma when burned.

Types:

1. White Copal – Cleaner, more refined, often used in incense.
2. Golden or Yellow Copal – Used in varnishes and art.
3. Black Copal – Less refined, often sticky, used traditionally in spiritual practices.

Uses:

Incense and ritual use – Popular in African, South American, and Mesoamerican traditions (especially in Mayan and Aztec cultures).
Varnishes and lacquers – Especially in wood finishing and oil painting mediums.
Adhesives and sealants – In traditional applications.
Art and crafts – Used in making polishes and resins.

Distinction:

Do not confuse gum copal with amber (which is much older and harder) ordamar resin (which is lighter and clearer). Gum copal is a transitional resin, valued for both practical and ceremonial purposes.
