Gum copal PWS

Gum copal is a natural resin obtained from various species of trees in the *Protium* and *Dacryodes* genera, primarily found in tropical regions of Africa, South America, and Southeast Asia. It's often used in a variety of industries, such as in the making of varnishes, incense, perfumes, and even traditional medicine.

Characteristics:

Appearance: Copal gum typically comes in the form of translucent or opaque yellow, amber, or pale brown chunks or tears. When fresh, it can be quite soft and sticky, but as it ages, it hardens and becomes more brittle.

Scent: The resin has a sweet, fragrant odor, which intensifies when burned, making it a popular choice in incense-making. It's often described as a warm, woody, or citrusy aroma.

Uses:

In varnishes and lacquers: Gum copal is prized for its ability to create a high-gloss finish, particularly in the restoration of antiques and artwork.
In perfumes: It’s used as a fixative, helping to anchor other, more volatile fragrance notes.
In incense: Its aromatic properties are used in traditional and modern incense blends, especially in spiritual or ceremonial contexts.
Traditional medicine: Some cultures use copal resin in healing rituals, although its medicinal benefits are more anecdotal than scientifically proven.

Differences from Amber: While copal shares similarities with amber (both are tree resins), amber is fossilized and much older. Copal is considered a younger resin and can sometimes be mistaken for amber when it's not fully aged.
